Part of the Gupta Empire between 300 AD and 500 AD, it was also under the reign of King Ashoka. Other important rulers include Madhoji Schindia, Ahilyabai Holkar, Rani Durgabati. It became a separate State in November 1956. Historically known as Malva, Madhya Pradesh came under various rulers in different times. The Chandelas constructed the fantastic temple at Khajuraho.

Art & Craft : The finest zari embroidery come from Chanderi and Maheshwar. Hand printings of various kinds, including tie and dye, is done all over the State. The Nandana prints of Bhairongarh, carpets of Gwalior, lacquer work of Sheopur, Rewa & Bundi, ragdolls of Khandwa and stone craft of Jabalpur are specially popular.

Culture : Holi, Deepawali, Dussehra, Id are the major festivals. Sravan Somvar is one of the special festivals celebrated in most parts of Madhya Pradesh when Shiva lingams are created with different materials including ice, wax, sholapith & flowers.

Industry : Locomotives, Railway wagons, heavy & light electrical industries are present.
